Trump vs North Korea: A Scary Game of Chicken

The US and North Korea relationship has never been good but throw in the new trigger happy Trump administration and this is leading to an inevitable conflict very soon. President Trump and his team have spent the past two weeks bombing things while all the little scandals and headlines plaguing the administration has taken a backseat. This may lead to an “Oh a scandal is happening, who can we bomb” mentality. Speaking of which, who’s moving up the leaderboard on the placed Trump wants to bomb list?

North Korea took time on April 15th to celebrate their “Day of the Sun” holiday in honor of the founder and current leader Kim Jong Un’s grandfather. During the event they show off their military in parades and weapon tests. This is a grand spectacle oozing testosterone and to stroke the ego of Kim Jong as his military troops salute and claim they will die for him. North Korea has sent many threats in the direction of the US and South Korea. Their threats are usually revolving showing great revolutionary force against the evil United States who want to attack them. That’s the way they see things and they have continued to perform underground nuclear tests. So the closer they get to having an intercontinental ballistic missile and a nuclear weapon, the worse we are in the world. North Korea is truly the wild card in the world deck of cards. Unpredictable and dangerous.

Trump has made repeated statements directed at North Korea while also using his “deal-making” abilities to get help on the matter. Trump met with Chinese President Xi Jinping to try and coax him into helping with the North Korea situation. The relationship between China and North Korea is deep. China is their biggest trade partner taking 83% of North Korea’s exports which accounted for $2.83 billion in 2015. China has urged North Korea to give up on their quest for a nuclear program and also urging the US to not try to fix the problem through military might. It seems like a start of some mediation but still far from anything substantial.

North Korea seems to be full-go on acquiring a nuclear weapon and has made many threats that they are ready to attack the US or anyone that is trying to attack them. North Korea and Trump are about to engage in a pissing contest and in that scenario who wins? It’s going to take a lot of finesse to bring this situation back from the brink of some sort of war. We all know the one thing Trump is about, it’s finesse. Right? Hello??

Okay, so maybe his forte is more the “hammering the square peg until it fits into the round hole” variety. but we need to pay attention to what is going on right now. Trump pledges that he will handle the North Korea situation while North Korea is threatening a nuclear attack against the US. This is a game of chicken between two unstable parties. Let’s hope China can smooth this out before it escalates.

Or maybe Trump can listen to a person with much more experience against North Korea than anyone I can think of.
