Against Trump’s Wishes, Special Counsel Mueller Appointed to Russia Investigation

On Wednesday, the Justice Department decided enough was enough, and to restore confidence in the system with the American people, they appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller as special prosecutor to oversee the investigation into Russia’s involvement in the 2016 election.

The Trump administration as recently as Monday was against a special prosecutor being brought in to oversee the Russia investigation, with Sean Spicer commenting on the possibility.

“There’s, frankly, no need for a special prosecutor,” Spicer said. “You have two Senate committees that are looking into this, the FBI is conducting their own review. And — and I think if you even look at what Acting Director (Andrew) McCabe said last week, he made it very clear that they have the resources that they need and that the work continues.”

A special prosecutor takes the power away from Trump who may have been seen as trying to influence the investigation through intimidation. The recent report that Trump had requested Comey drop his investigation into Michael Flynn is just one example of Trump using his power to try and persuade people to do what he wants. Trump also stated that he took the Russia probe into consideration as a reason for the firing of Comey tying the firing directly to Russia in his own words.

The kind of gamesmanship Trump has been using may have worked in the private sector where backdoor deals are way more routine, but in the world of politics too many eyes are watching and taking note of everything you do. It’s why the best politicians can skirt the gray areas in what they say and how they say it while Trump doesn’t do as well with framing his words carefully.

The Justice Department in seeing this entire fiasco getting more out of hand every day needed to act and bring somebody to reign the madness in. Mueller was appointed as FBI director in 2001 by George W. Bush until 2013 when James Comey took over. Mueller released the following short statement after being appointed special counsel to the Russia investigation.

“I accept this responsibility and will discharge it to the best of my ability.”

I can see the Trump administration, following any sign of head-bumping with Mueller, claiming Mueller is treating them unfairly because of his relationship with James Comey. This is a huge development that will lead to an intensification of the investigation which cannot sit well with Trump. He wants this investigation done but it seems every move he makes seems to spotlight it even more. A more intense investigation means there will be more bits and pieces of info found that may not be a smoking gun but will play poorly in the media and will require the administration to answer to. This is a long way from being over and this will dominate the Trump presidency for the foreseeable future.
