Dealmaker-in-Chief Trump: Healthcare is Biggest Blow to First 65 Days

Repeal and replace Obamacare! Donald Trump said this would be done on day one and the wheels began moving immediately after the inauguration. Work was being done on crafting the bill that would finally end Obamacare and start America on the Trumpcare train. You know how a bill becomes a law right? If not here’s an oldy but a goldy.

Ever since President Obama’s signature healthcare reform the Affordable Care Act (ACA or Obamacare for short) was passed, Republicans everywhere hated it. For the next seven years, it was fight after fight trying to delete Obamacare from being the law of the land. Any huge sweeping healthcare reform is going to have problems and Obamacare was ripe with them. Every single one of those problems became an “aha” moment for Republicans which was held up to the spotlight as another reason why Obamacare should be repealed. Instead of finding ways to fix the problems and make the law of the land work better and more efficiently for everyone, Republicans wanted to just throw it into the bonfire and watch it roast but they never had the votes or the presidency to really force that agenda.

Fast forward to 2017 and now that Republicans are holding the House of Representatives, Speaker of the House Paul Ryan could still not get enough yes votes to get the bill past the floor. Ryan needed 215 total votes of yes to get the bill through the House but 32 Republicans were a firm no. That’s 10 more than he could afford to lose. So, the vote was called off and the bill was pulled. Trumpcare is DOA before even actually A-ing. Republicans have the House, Senate, and Presidency but could not even get this bill out of the starting gate. Republicans have been screaming to the rafters that Obamacare needs to be replaced for seven years but after all this time they never had a good enough plan ready to take it’s place.

Well, 65 days since inauguration day and President Trump must be waking up wondering what exactly happened and why. President Trump was quick to blame the bill’s failure on Democrats not supporting it but this is just a poor spin on his part. This is by far the biggest blow against Trump in an already tumultuous start to his presidency. This goes directly against the biggest sticking point for Trump during his campaign. President Trump sold himself to the American people as the ultimate deal maker. Remember, he makes great deals and no one could out-deal the deal-maker-in-chief but he couldn’t get his own party to deal with him. Healthcare reform is no small feat and repealing something as ingrained as Obamacare is at this point is a tough sell for anyone especially when you don’t have a clear enough consensus in your own party what is needed in the replacement.
